Understanding Aspect Ratios

What is Aspect Ratio?

Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and height.

16:9 = 1920×1080 pixels
Width is 1.78 times the height
4:3 = 1024×768 pixels
Width is 1.33 times the height

Why Aspect Ratios Matter

Platform Requirements: Each platform has optimal ratios
Instagram: 1:1, Facebook: 16:9
Print Standards: Avoid stretching or cropping
Photos: 3:2, A4: √2:1
Screen Display: Match device ratios
Laptop: 16:10, Phone: 9:16

Common Ratio Types

Landscape (Horizontal): Width > Height
16:9, 4:3, 21:9
Portrait (Vertical): Height > Width
9:16, 3:4, 2:3
Square: Equal dimensions
1:1

Calculation Methods

From Width: Height = Width ÷ Ratio
1920 ÷ 1.78 = 1080
From Height: Width = Height × Ratio
1080 × 1.78 = 1920
Simplify Ratio: Divide by GCD
1920:1080 = 16:9
